How are your dentures doing?

Senior woman smiles into the camera

“You’re getting younger and younger!”

This statement from friends and acquaintances is usually the reward for the long sessions at the dentist until you finally have your new set of teeth and can show off your teeth again.

Dentists and dental technicians create functional and optical masterpieces that hardly differ from natural teeth. Photos from the time when the natural teeth were still present are often used in order to get as close as possible to the original. So that you can enjoy the quality of life you have regained for a long time with carefree laughter, talking and eating, you should give the “third parties” special attention and care. Cleaning the denture after every meal: Brushing under running water with a denture brush removes food residue and deposits and thus prevents bacteria from settling. However, foul-smelling putrefactive bacteria do not form on inadequately cleaned teeth and dentures, but also on the tongue and especially in the back area.

Use a tongue cleaner: The additional use of a suitable tongue cleaner reduces up to 85% of bad breath. If there are signs of plaque formation, quick-acting cleaning tablets are best. Unfortunately, sooner or later the joy of the perfect dentures will be spoiled. It no longer sits as firmly as it did at the beginning, it pinches, and food particles are increasingly getting under the prosthesis. The reason for this is the slow but steady shrinkage of the toothless jawbone.

Finally, the soft tissue cannot cope with the unnatural chewing pressure caused by the prosthesis and changes shape. A wobbly prosthesis is not only uncomfortable but it also loses part of its function of breaking up food as well as possible, which is essential for good digestion and good health. As we all know, “well chewed is half digested”.

At the beginning you can still use adhesives, but these have to be renewed after every meal/cleaning. At some point, however, the inaccuracy of the fit becomes so bad that an adjustment (relining) of the prosthesis by the dentist becomes unavoidable.

If you want to delay this complex and expensive procedure, you can also purchase reliable relining products from the pharmacy. Nevertheless, the following still applies: everyone should visit a dentist twice a year for a check-up. Only he can detect any changes to the prosthesis and oral mucosa and take any necessary measures to protect your health.
